The first of two extra care schemes in Luton, which we delivered for longstanding customer, bpha, in 2009, was officially opened today (28th January) by HRH Prince Edward, the Earl of Wessex.
Guests at the opening ceremony for Betty Dodd Court, Grange Avenue, Leagrave, included local dignitaries and Heather Fletcher and Carolyn Briggs, daughters of Betty Dodd who represented Luton on various health boards.
HRH Prince Edward spoke to residents and staff, before unveiling a gold plaque in the lounge and giving a short speech.
Local councilor, Mohammed Riaz, said: “Betty Dodd would have been proud to see this splendid new housing provision for local people. I and other colleagues on the council have had amazingly positive feedback from the residents and their families and I wish them every happiness in their new homes.”
Completed in June 2009, Betty Dodd comprises 47 one and two bedroom apartments with communal facilities including a shop, activity room, dining room, kitchen, lounge, courtyard garden and a hair salon, all set over three storeys and designed to the EcoHomes standard.
Our second extra care scheme for bpha delivered in Luton last year – Jill Jenkins Court – will be officially opened on Friday 19th March by Lord McKenzie.
Funding for both schemes came from Luton Borough Council, bpha, the Housing Corporation and Supporting People.
